A lifelong love

After a rewarding corporate career, I was fortunate enough to retire and choose how to spend my days. Golf rather quickly volunteered to fill them.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky to belong to some of the world’s most prestigious clubs. Yet whenever I travelled, the tools in my bag for finding a game were surprisingly limited: someone I knew, someone they knew, or a call from my club’s pro. There were so many places to play, and so few ways to meet the people who played there.

That was the seed of Thousand Greens. What if private-club golfers could simply find each other? A fellow member to welcome you, share their club, and make a place you’d never been feel a little more familiar.

The hobby that got a little out of hand

TG began as my retirement hobby. My friends were, let’s say, unconvinced. I built it anyway. What started small grew into a community of golfers around the world, supported by members who wanted it to keep growing.

For me, the reason to keep building it is still personal: more golf, more friendships, and more people discovering how much they have in common over a round. A member telling me about a friendship that began on TG is the kind of return I care about most.

A wonderful course gives you plenty to remember. Playing it with someone who loves it gives you a reason to come back.

These days, home is Maui

I now live in Maui full time, among the ocean breezes and sloping fairways. Retirement has turned out to involve rather a lot of thinking about golf, talking about golf, and finding reasons to play golf.

There are worse ways to spend a day.
